RangeC. w. Pacific Ocean; C. w. Atlantic Ocean;
Two populations in widely separated locations;
(1) Chesterfield Reefs and small cays in the Coral Sea and is. in the s. Pacific Ocean between 8°S and 27°S including Raine Is. on the Great Barrier Reef off ne. Australia (Cape York Peninsula, Queensland) to French Polynesia and Tonga Is. (Eau Is.), Cook Is. (Rarotonga Is.), Tuamotu Archipelago (Gambier Is.), Marquesas Is. (Ua Pu, Tahuata), Pitcairn Is. (Oeno, Ducie Is.) and Easter Is.
Disperses mainly into Pacific waters s. of the equator, but seems to reach 39°N at the nw. Hawaiian Is. (French Frigate Shoals) in the c. Pacific Ocean (October to January).
(2) S. Atlantic Ocean on Trindade and Martin Vas Is. off the coast of c. Brazil and in the w. Indian Ocean on Round Is. off Mauritius in the Mascarene Is. It is suspected to breed in the Cocos-Keeling Is. (North Keeling Is.) in the w. Indian Ocean.
Disperse n. in the Atlantic Ocean as far as 42°N.
