Range
Sw. Pacific Ocean n. to ce. Pacific Ocean;
Breeds in New Zealand on the summits of Little Barrier and Great Barrier Is. off North Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Formerly breed in mountains ranges on North and nw. South Islands (Taranaki, Nelson, Westland, Fiordland) and Stewart Is.
Disperses into surrounding New Zealand waters (North and South Islands) primarily off ne. North Island (Bay of Plenty, East Cape), Tasman Sea off e. Australia (New South Wales (Wollongong) and e. Victoria) and to a lesser degree into the c. and e. Pacific as far as the Galapagos and far off the coasts of Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and possibly w. Mexico from March to November.
