Range

E. Pacific Ocean;
Breeds on only a few islands off Arauco, Chile: the Juan Fernandez (Mas-a-Tierra or Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Morro Vinilla Is.) and s. of Mocha Is. Main breeding area on Isla Mocha is on the e. side of the island in forests above a village. The main feeding area is 250km n. of Isla Mocha close to the Chilean coast. It may also breed on Guafo and other is. off Chiloe, Chile.
Disperses in the e. Pacific Ocean n. to Peru, Ecuador (Galapagos), Colombia and n. of 10°N along the w. coast of Mexico (Baja), the United States and Canada to se. Alaska occasionally to the Gulf of Alaska and s. Bering Sea. Stragglers occur w. to Hawaiian Is. and Kiribati.
