Breeds off w. Mexico (Revillagigedo Is., San Benedicto, Baja), most is. in the c. and sw. Pacific Ocean including Hawaiian Is. (Leeward, Nihoa, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii), Bonin, Volcano, Taiwan (Pescadores) to Micronesia and Polynesia including Marianas, Wake, Caroline, Marshall, Johnston, Phoenix, Samoan, Marquesas, Pitcairn, Henderson, New Caledonia, Lord Howe and Norfolk Is., Solomons, Vanuatu, Fiji and Kermadec Is., se. New Guinea (Idihi and Bavo Is.), is. in the Torres Strait e. to Montagu Is., Australia (Queensland to New South Wales (Wollongong, Red Bluff), South Australia (Smith Is.). In the Indian Ocean on is. off w. Western Australia (Dampier Archipelago s. to Rottnest and Carnac Is.) and the Gulf of Aden including is. off Madagascar, Mascarene, Amirante, Cargados, Carajos Shoals, Seychelles, Maldives, Chagos Archipelago e. to Cocos Is. (n. Keeling Is.).
Disperses into the tropical Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean to Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, s. Japan, s. China, Philippines, n. and e. New Guinea, s. Java, s. Sumatra, Sri Lanka, s. Arabian Peninsula from Gulf of Oman s. to s. Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, e. South Africa to the Cape of Good Hope.
