Range

E. Australia, New Zealand and the Tasman Sea;
Breeds in New Zealand on many is. off North Island (Three Kings, Motorua, Stephenson, Cavalli, Poor-Knights, Bream, Hens-and-Chickens, Mokohinau, Channel, Little Turi, Mercury, Alderman, Slipper, Plate, Rurima Rocks) and in the Cook Strait (Stephens, Chetwode, Trio Is.), Queen Charlotte Sound and Marlborough Sound. Formerly bred on Little Barrier and Chatham Is.
Disperses to South Island (Canterbury Bight) and into the Tasman Sea to e. Australia (e. South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales (Wollongong) and ex. s. Queensland (Lady Musgrave Island) as far n. as 24°S), Furneaux Is., Tasmania as far n. as New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Some birds spend the summer off se. Australia.
