Range

Nearly circumpolar; Se. Atlantic Ocean; S. Indian Ocean; Sw. Pacific Ocean;
(1) Breeds s. of 30°S from the mid s. Atlantic through the s. Indian Ocean to the Tasman Sea and sw. Pacific to 130°W. Nests on Tristan da Cunha, Gough, Crozet, Marion, Prince Edward, Kerguelen and Amsterdam (?) Is., and is. off the s. coast of Western Australia from Albany to Cape Arid (Recherche Archipelago on Bald, Coffin and Eclipse Is.).
(2) Is. and headlands of North Island, New Zealand from New Plymouth on the w. coast to Three Kings Is. near Gisborne on the e. coast with larger colonies on Hens and Chickens, Mokokinau, Mercury, Alderman, Whale and White Is.
Dispersal is nearly circumpolar between 30°S and 50°S off se. Brazil (Sao Paulo), Argentina, c. Angola, Namibia, South Africa, c. Mozambique (mouth of the Limpopo River), Australia (s. Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria (Portland), New South Wales (Wollongong), s. Queensland), Tasmania, New Zealand (North and South Island) and into the s. Pacific nearly to Pitcairn Is.
