C. Indian Ocean to w. and c. Pacific Ocean;
(1) Bonin, Volcano (Torishima), Hawaiian Is. (Leeward Is., Niihau, Kauai (Kilauea Point), Oahu (Koko Crater near Halona Blowhole, Manana Is.), Lanai (e. coast near Mauana), Kahoolawe), Marianas (Maug, Pagan), Kiribati (Phoenix, Line Is.), American Samoa (Rose Atoll), Fiji, Tonga, Cook, Tuamotu, Tubuai Is., New Caledonia, Pitcairn Is. Probably breeds of San Benedicto and Clipperton Is. off w. Mexico.
(2) Great Barrier Reef off ne. Australia (Queensland, Raine Is., Herald Cays, Coringa Is., Lady Elliot Is., off Brisbane, and New South Wales off Wollongong), Lord Howe, Norfolk, Kermadec Is. and Vanuatu e. to Easter Is. and probably Sala-y-Gomez.
(3) Nw. Australia (Abrolhos Group, Rottnest Is., Sugarloaf Rock off Cape Naturalist), Christmas, Cocos (Keeling), Manuk and Gunung Api (Lesser Sundas) in the Banda Sea and Paracel Reefs (South China Sea).
(4) Aldabra, Comoro (?), Mauritius (Round Is.), Seychelles (?).
Disperses from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf to Sala-y-Gomez, e. South Africa (Natal), Mosambique, Madagascar, w. Sumatra, s. Java, New Guinea, n. Australia (Western Australia and Queensland), New Zealand (n. North Island), New Caledonia and n. to Japan.
