Fragmented distribution;
Breeds in Romania (Danube Delta), Greece (Lake Mikra Prespa), Turkey, s. Russia (n. Black Sea, e. Sea of Azov, n. Caspian Sea, Volga Delta, n. Aral Sea, Lake Balkhash, Ile River Delat, Kazakhistan), nw. Iran, nw. Persian Gulf (Kuwait), Pakistan (Rann of Kutch, Thatta and Badin District, and Indus delta), w. India (Great Rann of Kutch), Nepal, w. Mongolia and s. Vietnam (Cochinchina). Is. off sw. Mauritania (Banc d'Arguin), Senegambia, Mali, Nigeria, Cameroon (Mogode), Chad (Lake Chad Basin), Ethiopia, sw, Kenya (Alkaline Rift Valley lakes, breeds on Lake Elmenteita, less often on Lake Natron and Lake Manyara), Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Lake St. Lucia, n. Zululand and is. off the sw. Cape of Good Hope). Formerly bred in Yugoslavia, Hungary and Bulgaria.
Winters: Turkey, Israel (Hula Nature Reserve), Egypt (Nile Delta, n. Red Sea), s. Iraq and nw. Iran. Angola, Congo, Zaire, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Sudan, Uganda, Niger, Upper Volta. W. Pakistan, n. India, Nepal, s. Burma, Malaya, Cambodia, Annam, se. China, Sumatra and Java. Wintering areas of European birds are unknown;
