Breeds in w. Canada, locally in sc. British Columbia, ne. Alberta, wanders to s. Mackenzie, nw. Saskatchewan, c. Manitoba, extreme sw. Ontario, s. to nw. United States e. of the Cascades and Sierras in e. Washington to c. and s. California, w. Nevada, s. Idaho, n. Utah (Great Salt Lake), Montana, Wyoming, n. Colorado, North Dakota, ne. South Dakota, sw. Minnesota and a small colony on the Texas coast s. of Corpus Christi. An isolated population may occur in w. Mexico (Durango). Some non-breeding birds remain in the winter territory during summer months;
Winters from c. California and Florida s. along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts to the Gulf of Mexico, both coasts to s. Mexico and Costa Rica as well as the n. West Indies (w. Cuba).
