Range

S. and e. Australia, Tasmania, Tasman Sea and New Zealand;
Six breeding colonies off Australia (w. and s. Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and s. Queensland) and Tasmania (Wedge Light and Lawrence Rocks off Victoria, Black Pyramid and Cat Is. in the Bass Strait and Pedra Branca and Eddystone Rock off s. Tasmania) and in New Zealand, mainly between 34°S and 40°S off North Island from Three Kings Is. to Hawkes Bay (largest colony at White Is.), islands off of Cape Kidnappers with small colonies at Otago, South Island, Little Solander Is. in the Foveaux Strait and Norfolk Is.
In New Zealand young birds disperse to Australian waters where the winter range extends from Western Australia (Point Cloates), South Australia, Victoria (Portland), New South Wales (Wollongong) to se. Queensland (Mackay) as far n. as the Tropic of Capricorn.
