(1) C. Madagascar.
(2) The fragmented breeding range from sw. Mauritana (Banc d'Arguin) and ne. Senegambia. Niger River at two locations c. Mali and then at ne. Nigeria, ne. Benin and ex. sw. Niger. Ex. ne. Nigeria and ex. ne. Cameroon, Lake Chad in wc. Chad, c. and s. Sudan. Sao Tome. The Blue Nile in wc. Ethiopia. Ex. sc. Angola and nc. Namibia. The main population breeds through the Rift Valley from w. and s. Somalia, Uganda and c. Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, c. Tanzania, ex. se. Zaire, Zambia, Malawi, nw. to c. Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana to ne. and s. South Africa. Disperses to e. Mauritania, s. Mali, Senegambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Ghana, s. Niger, s. Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, c. Sudan, Ethiopia, w. Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zaire, Congo, Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa.
Wanders to Sao Tome, Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba Is. Apparently wanders to offshore islands.
