Breeds in the e. Pacific and w. Atlantic Oceans: se. United States (Florida on Marquesas Key) throughout the West Indies (Bahamas, Antilles (Little Cayman and Little Swan Is.) e. to Barbuda and in the n. Lesser Antilles and the Grenadines), Mexico (Baja on Santa Margarita Is., Revillagigedo Is. (San Benedicto), Nayarit on Isahel, Tres Marietas Is., Oaxaca on Natartiac Is. and along the coasts of Veracruz and Yucatan Peninsula), Belize (Man-of-war Cay and Half Moon Cay National Monument), Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras (Pajaro Is. in the Gulf of Fonseca), Costa Rica (Bolanos Is.), Panama (islets in the Gulf of Chiriqui and Bay of Panama), Colombia (Malpelo and Gorgonilla Is. and Islas de Rosario near Cartagena), Ecuador, Galapagos Is., off n. Venezuela on Los Hermanos and Margarita Is. e. to Tobago and Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam, Guiana to s. Brazil (off Bahia, Sao Paulo, and Fernando de Noronha). An isolated relict population may no longer exist in the Cape Verde Is. (Boa Vista).
Disperses in the Pacific from s. Alaska, w. Canada, w. United States s. to n. Peru (Gulf of Guayaquil), into the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and w. Atlantic from Nova Scotia s. to Uruguay and n. Argentina (Buenos Aires) and off w. Africa to Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

Summer: in the w., n. to n. CAL and in the e., in FLA (Dry Tortugas, Florida Keys) and off the Gulf of Mexico coasts of s. ALA, s. MIS, s. LOU, e. TEX. Casual in the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic coasts of GEO, SCA, NCA (Cape Hatteras), VIR, MYD.
