Coastal s. North America, Central America and ex. n. South America;
Fragmented distribution with ca. six populations;
(1) Se. and sc. United States (Texas coast and the w. coast of Florida from Tampa Bay s. to the Florida Keys), Mexico (Yucatan and offshore islands), West Indies (nw. Bahamas on Grand Bahama, Abaco, Andros and Great Inagua, Cuba, Isle of Pines, Hispaniola, formerly Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Martin), Bonaire, Aruba, Curacao, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, ne. Colombia (Barranquilla e. to Guajira), Venezuela (Falcon and Sucre).
(2) Nw. Mexico (Sonora, Sinaloa and Oaxaca) and Baja.

North America n. of Mexican border
Summer: Breeds in coastal TEX and rarely in the Mississippi Delta of LOU and sw. FlA (Tampa Bay, Florida Bay, the Florida Keys, rarely on the e. coast). In the late summer, it disperses to the n. coast of the Gulf of Mexico in LOU and ALA, rarely further n. to Cape Hatteras and s. California;
Winter: coastal TEX, s. FLA (Tampa Bay to the Florida Keys and dispersing inland occasionally to s. Lake Okeechobee).
