Sudan to c. Ethiopia (upper White and Blue Nile Rivers), Eritrea, se. Somalia, Uganda, w. and s. Kenya (lower Tana River and Lake Jipe, also breeds near Garsen), Rwanda, Burundi, e. Zaire, Tanzania, w. Zambia (Zambezi River and s. Barotse Province), Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, s. and e. Angola, n. Namibia (Okavango River), n. and e. Botswana (Limpopo River) to e. and ex. s. South Africa (Transvaal, e. Orange Free State, Natal, se. Cape Province) and n. Madagascar (Tsimbazaza near Tananarive).
