Italy, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), Romania (Danube Delta), Bulgaria, n. Greece, c. and s. Ukraine, s. Russia (Volga Delta and the upper Irtysh River region) to the Amu Darya on the Uzbek-Afghanistan border and s. in e. Turkey, Syria, Isreal (Hula Valley), Jordan, Iraq, Iran (s. Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf) to Transcaspia to Turkestan. Africa in nw. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt (Nile Valley), sw. Mauritania Senegambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, s. Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad (Lake Chad area), Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, w. Kenya (breeds regularly near Garsen), Uganda, Tanzania, ne. and se. Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Gabon, Congo, Angola, n. Namibia, e. Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa (Transvaal, Orange Free State, Natal, se. Cape Province) and Madagascar, Comoro Is. and Aldabra.
Disperses thougthout Africa and Red Sea coast of Arabia and Oman.
