Range

Former range included ex. se. Brazil and Uruguay to c. and ne. Argentina. Presently restricted almost exclusively to the sw. portion of its former range. Only two known breeding populations, one in Uruguay and the other in adjacent Argentina. Recently a few birds have been found s. of its historical range where the Pampas meet the Patagonian steppes.
