Range
W. and s. South America;
Fragmented distribution;
Breeds on lakes in the Andes of the Magellanic zone from Tierra del Fuego and Puerto Natales in Magallanes n. in Chile (salares in Tarapaca, Lake Atacama in Antofagasta, Lake Maricunga in Atacama), c. and s. Argentina (lowlands of Cordoba and Santa Fe and Patagonia s. to Santa Cruz) and sw. Bolivia (La Paz, Tarija, Oruro on Lakes Poopo and Coipasa, Potosi on Lakes Chalviri and Uyuni) to c. and s. Peru (s. Ayacucho, Junin on Lake Junin).
Disperses in the winter along the Pacific coast from Tumbes, Peru s. with stragglers as far n. as ex. sw. Ecuador and to Uruguay (Laguna Jose Ignacio, Banados del Este), ex. se. Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), c. Paraguay (Rio Paraguay).
