Russia and s. half of Siberia (Lake Baikal) s. of the Arctic Circle to Amurland and s. Kamchatka, s. to the n. Mediterranean Basin in Corsica, Sardinia, Cyprus (formerly), Turkey, nw. Iran to the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, Transcaucasus, Aral Sea, Kazakhstan, Turkmenia-Uzbek border, w. China (w. Sinkiang), Mongolia s. to lakes just n. of Altai Mountains and Gobi Desert, Manchuria (Heilungkiang, Kirin) and s. Siberia to Ussuriland and the Soviet Far East, Japan (Hokkiado) and Sakhalin Is.
Winters s. in the s. Palearctic, Ethiopian and Oriental regions from the Mediterranean Basin and Black Sea to sub-Saharan Africa in s. Mauritania, Senegal, c. Mali, Burkina Faso, s. Niger, n. Benin, n. Nigeria, n. Cameroon, s. Chad (Lake Chad), n. Central African Republic, Egypt (Nile Valley), c. Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, w. Somalia, e. Zaire, Uganda (Lake Wamala), Kenya (Rift Valley and in w. adn c. highlands, also on lower Tana River), Rwanda, Burundi, w. Tanzania (smaller Rift Valley lakes) and n. Zambia, Indian subcontinent in Nepal, Pakistan, India (Kashmir, Little Rann of Kutch, Kerala), se. Asia in s. China, Taiwan and Hainan, the Philippines, New Guinea (Vogelkop, along s. coast, Lake Kandep, Trans-Fly, Port Moresby), n. Australia (Kimberely District and Yanchep, n. Western Australia, and Darwin and the Top-End, Northern Territory and n. Queensland) and Hawaii (rarely).
