W. North America, Central America, Andes of w. South America and s. South America;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Sw. Canada (s. Vancouver Is., s. British Columbia n, to Williams Lake and in the Caribou-Chilcotin Parklands, s. Alberta and s. Saskatchewan) s. in the w. United States (e. Montana, Wyoming, c. North Dakota, w. Nebraska and c. Kansas s. to c. Texas) s. to n. Baja and nw. Mexico (Jalisco, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas). Main breeding concentration is in the wetlands surrounding the Great Salt Lake, Utah. An isolated population has bred in w. Ontario.
Winters in the sw. United States throughout Mexico (Jalisco, Chihuahua and Tamaulipas) through Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama) to w. and s. South America in n. Colombia (e. of the Andes), n. Venezuela and n. Ecuador.
(2) Nw. Colombia below 1000m in the Cauca Valley and the Cauca and Magdalena drainages.
(3) Andes of w. Colombia (Bogota Savanna, Sebundoy, Lake Tota, Lake Fuguene, Lake La Cocha) and n. Ecuador (formerly) in the moist highlands and savannas from 1000 to 3600m.
(4) Andes in the Plateau regions s. Peru (Cuzco, Ayacucho), Bolivia (Lake Titicaca, Potosi, Cochabamba) s. to n. Chile (Aria to Antofagasta) and n. Argentina (Cajamarca to Jujuy).
Winters in the Pacific lowlands of c. Peru and n. Chile.
(5) Amazon basin of s. Peru (coastal in Mollendo and Amazonian regions), Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro, Potosi), Paraguay, ex. se. Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), Argentina s. to Tierra del Fuego and the Straits of Magellan and the Falklands Is.
