Germany (Schleswig-Holstein, Krakower Obersee, Bavaria, and the Bodensee), Switzerland, Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, e. and w. Austria (Neusiedlersee), Czechoslovakia, Greece (Lake Aarus), Bulgaria, Romania, s. Ukraine and s. Russia, then e. through Turkey, ne. Israel, n. Iran (possibly) and in the s. USSR on the ne. Black Sea (Sea of Azov), n. Caucasus to the n. Caspian Sea, s. in the Transcaucasus and e. to Kazakhstan, Kirghiz steppes, Turkestan and Afghanistan to w. Siberia, w. Mongolia, nw. China to Inner Mongolia and nw. Sinkiang (Kara Irtysh Valley).
Winters in n. and e. Mediterranean Basin (Turkey), s. USSR (Black Sea, Sea of Azov), Middle East (Iran on the s. Caspian Sea), Pakistan (Chashma Barrage, Mianwah District), nw. India (Kashmir decreasing e. to Assam s. to Tamil Nadu) and s. China, Nepal (Rara Lake) and Burma s. to Egypt in Nile Valley s. to 25°N. Introduced to Great Britain, but not firmly established.
Formerly in Algeria.
