Range

N. North America;
W. Alaska e. across n. Canada in the n. Yukon through c. Mackenzie (Great Slave Lake), n. Alberta, Saskatchewan (Lake Athabasca), n. Manitoba to Hudson Bay and James Bay s. to w. and c. Alaska w. to the Alaskan Peninsula and e. through s. Yukon, c. British Columbia, c. Alberta, n. Saskatchewan to wc. and e. Quebec (Lake Mistassim) and Labrador. Non-breeding flocks occur from s. Alaska s. to Oregon.
Winters along Pacific coast of Aleutians, s. Alaska, w. Canada, w. United States (California) and nw. Mexico (Baja and in the Gulf of California s. to coast of Sonora), Great Lakes and along the Atlantic coast from se. Canada to e. United States s. to North Carolina and less frequently as far as n. Florida.

ONT (Carlton Is. and Sheppard Is. in James Bay), wc. and ec. QUE (Wakuach Lake and near Otelnuk Lake) and LAB (Petitsikapau Lake and Grand Falls);
Winters in the Aleutians and along the Pacific coast of s. ALK, BCO, WAS, ORE, CAL s. to nw. Mexico (Baja and the n. Gulf of California). Along the Atlantic coasts from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, PEI, NSC, NBR, MAE, NHP, MAS, RID, CON, NYK, NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR, NCA, SCA, GEO and n. FLA.
