Nw. North America. Labrador. Sw. Greenland. Iceland;
Strangely disjunct range with main population in nw. North America and smaller populations in e. Canada and Iceland; C., s. and se. Alaska w. to the Alaskan Peninsula and across w. Canada in s. Yukon (Takhini river, Kathleen River), w. Mackenzie, n. British Columbia (dry region in Okanagan, Nicola, Kamloops, Chilcotin and Cariboo Districts) and sw. Alberta s. in w. United States to ne. California (ne. Sierra Nevada), n. Montana, nw. Wyoming and sw. Colorado. E. Canada (ne. Quebec and n. Labrador probably in Killinek). Sw. Greenland (irregularly). Iceland (Lake Myvatin).
Winters in w. United States s. to c. California (San Francisco Bay), Utah and Wyoming and in e. from the Gulf of St. Lawrence s. to Maine with a few birds on the Great Lakes, in New York, in the upper St. Lawrence, off Newfoundland and off sw. Greenland.

Summer: W. North America in sc. ALK (Kodiak Is.), c. YUK, cw. MAC, BCO, ex. w. ALB s. to ne. and c. WAS, c. and ne. ORG, c. IDH, nw. MON and nw. WYO (Yellowstone). E. North America locally in n. LAB and ce. QUE. The latter location is questionable.
Winters along the Pacific coast of s. ALK, BCO, WAS and ORG to c. CAL (San Francisco Bay) and inland in WAS, ORG, c. and se. CAL, c. and se. NEV, IDH, w. MON, n. UTH, c. WYO, w. to sc. COL and locally in n. ARZ (Colorado River) and nw. NMX. Along the Atlantic coast from s. QUE (w. Gulf of St. Lawrence), NBR, PEI, NSC and MAE. Less frequently s. along Atlantic coast of ex. se. NHP, MAS and ex. se. NYK (e. Long Island).
