Range

N. Palearctic s. of Arctic Circle;
Fragmented distribution towards the e. and w. limits of its range;
N. Scandinavia from n. Sweden (Norrbotten Archipelago) and Norway (s. Varanger) e. locally through n. and c. Russia, n. Siberia to Anadyrland and Kamchatka s. to Lake Baikal, ne. China (ne. Nei Mongol, Manchuria), n. Amurland and n. Sakhalin Is. Also locally and sporadically in Romania, sc. Russia on the lower Volga River and w. Siberia (Chukotski Peninsula). Formerly bred in the Danube delta. Rare migrant in the w. and c. Aleutians.
Winters in e. Europe, sw. Baltic Sea, c. Mediterranean basin in Greece, Turkey, Black Sea, Sea of Azov, s. USSR, Caspian Sea, Middle East in Iraq, Iran (Seistan basin), Afghanistan s. to n. Africa, n. India (Assam s. to Gujarat and Orissa), e. China, Korea and Japan (e. Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu). During cold winters, populations shift to w. France and s. England (reservoirs in Somerset, Essex and the London area) s. to North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt in the Nile delta), Nepal, Pakistan (Indus River and Salt Range Lakes) and n. India (Punjab to ne. Assam and s. to n. Gujarat and Orissa).
