Range

Central America and West Indies to n., c. and se. South America;
S. from c. Mexico (along the Pacific slope from s. Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima and possibly Chiapas and long the Atlantic slope of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo and in the Rio Lerma drainage and Lake Chapala, at least formerly), West Indies (Greater Antilles including Cuba and Hispaniola, Lesser Antilles, Grand Cayman and Barbados) through Central America where separate populations occur on the Pacific slope of Guatemala (since 1970), El Salvador (Jocotal Lagoon) and nw. Honduras (Lake Yojoa, Dpto. Cortes), n. Costa Rica (Cartago, Guanacaste, Tempisque Basin, Rio Frio District), Panama (Chagres River above Gamboa, e. San Blas in Puerto Obaldia, Volcan Lakes in w. Chiriqui, Canal Zone on Miraflores Lake and the Santa Maria Marshes of Herrera), Colombia (nw. Choco at Jurado, Cauca Valley, Magdalena Valley, e. Andes of Boyaca to 2600m at Laguna de Fuquene, Sabana de Bogota, Hacienda la Corocora, w. Meta, w. Putumayo and Cundinamarca) to w. Ecuador and nw. Peru s. to s. Llambayeque and Venezuela including Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Surinam, Guiana to e. Ecuador, e. Peru, Brazil (Bahia, Chapada Diamantina), se. Bolivia (Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, Tarija), Paraguay, Uruguay, n. Argentina (Tucuman, Santiago del Estero, Buenos Aires).
Disperses to and has bred in the s. United States (Gulf coast and Rio Grande Delta of s. Texas and Florida).

Summer and winter: se. TEX (Gulf coast and Rio Grande Delta including Welder Wildlife Refuge, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Attwater Prairie-chicken Refuge, Brazos Bend State Park) and s. FLA (probably nested in Loxahatchee);
Vagrants occur in the e. United States as far n. as Wisconsin and Vermont;
