Range

Greenland; Iceland; Spitsbergen;
Three populations;
E. Greenland, Iceland (breeds in a small area in the c. highlands at the headwaters of Jokulsa a Dal and Jokulsa a Fljotsdal, and gather at Eyjabakkar near the Snaefell Volcano and the ne. edge of the Vatnajokull glacier to moult) and Svalbard (Spitsbergen (Svalbard), Thjorsarver).
Some nonbreeding birds disperse to Greenland. Collected in Franz Josef Land (1914) and may breed in ex nw. Russia (Kola Peninsula).
Introduced to Great Britain, but not definitely established there.
The w. populations winter in Britain (Scotland, n. and e. England and se. Ireland).
The Svalbard population migrates s. over Norway to w. Denmark, then w. along the coasts of w. Germany to the Netherlands and Belgium with very small numbers reaching the Baltic lowlands, s. England and Ireland.
