Range

C. Asia;
Fragmented distribution;
Uzbekistan, Kirgizia or Kirghiz, (Lake Chatyr-Kul), Tadzhikistan (Pamir Mountains), ex. sw. Siberia (Tuva), Mongolia (Altai Mountains) and w. China (Sinkiang in the Tien Shan Mountains) e. to e. Koko Nor, Tsinghai, nw. Manchuria, Ningsia, Tsinghai s. to w. Tibet and n. India (Lake Tso Moriri, Ladakh and Kashmir) and Wakhan, ne. Afghanistan.
Migrates through Nepal, Assam and Sikkim.
Winters in s. China (s. Shensi, Szechwan, n. Yunnan, s. Tibet), n. Pakistan (Taunsa Dam near Dera Ghazi Khan) across n. India (Punjab, Rajasthan, the Gangetic Plain, Lake Chilka in Orissa, s. fairly regularly to Mysore) to Assam, Bangladesh and n. Burma.
A Small feral population existed in se. Sweden (Kalmarsund, ca. 1930) for a number of years, but its fate is uncertain. Introduced in Great Britain, but not well established. Escape birds occur regularly in w. Europe and North America.
