Range

Nw. Siberia;
Breeds in a very restricted area in nw. Siberia (s. regions of the Yamal, Gyda and w. Taimyr Peninsulas).
Migrates s. in the Tas and Ob River valleys to the n. Caspian Sea and then w. n. of the Caucasus Mountains to its primary wintering grounds on the n. and w. coasts of the Black Sea in Romania (lower Danube River and Danube Delta), Bulgaria (Poda Lagoon on the Black Sea coast) and s. Russia (Sea Azov). Small numbers winter along the wc. coast of the Caspian Sea (Azerbaydzhan), the Aral Sea, Hungary (Hortobagy National Park), Greece, Turkey and Iraq (Euphrates marshes). Occurs as a vagrant in Japan.
