Range
S. South America; Falkland Is.;
Two populations;
Ex. s. tip of South America: s. Chile s. from Concepcion (37°S) and Nuble (lakes at Recinto) through Cautin (Villarica), Valdivia (Ranco) and Magallanes (Estancia Rio Paine, n. of Puerto Natales) to Isla Hoste and s. Argentina s. from Neuquen (48°S) and the mouth of the Rio Negro through Patagonian Santa Cruz to Tierra del Fuego (Mantu Lake, Lake Yewin, the Beagle Channel, Stewart and Picton Is.) and Cape Horn as well as Staten Is. and the Falkland Is. N. limit of its range is uncertain due to confusion and overlap with the Chubut Steamerduck. Probably does not breed n. of Santa Cruz, but small numbers of nonbreeders occur as far n. as Chubut and the mouth of the Rio Negro.
