Range

S. New Guinea and n. Australia;
S. New Guinea from Port Moresby to Lake Murray near Merauke, n. Australia from ex. ne. Western Australia (Broome, Wyndham District, Ord River Dam) through the n. Northern Territory (Darwin, East Alligator River, Kakadu National Park, Adelaide River and Fitzroy River) to e. Queensland (Atherton Tablelands at Nardellos Lagoon, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Ayr River District).
Vagrants occur in n. New Guinea (Vogelkop, Geelvink Bay), s. Moluccas (Tanimbar, Seram, Ambon and Buru Is. where a small population formerly bred), n. Sulawesi.
