Fragmented distribution;
The w. population breeds in sw. Canada from s. British Columbia s. in the w. United States in Washington, Oregon, California. The e. population breeds from ec. and s. Saskatchewan and Manitoba e. to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia s. to c. and se. Texas (less frequently to s. Texas) the Gulf of Mexico coasts and s. Florida and West Indies (Bahamas, w. Cuba, Laguna la Deseada in Pinar del Rio)).
In winter, n. populations migrate s. as far as c. Mexico (Sonora s. at least to Distrito Federal, locally in ne. Sonora and nw. Chihuahua and coastal Tamaulipas s. to n. Veracruz).
Introduced to Europe (England in the se., Lake District, East Anglia and Germany).

IDH, then locally in wc. NEV, nc. UTH, c. ARZ, nw. and s. NMX and on the e. slope of the Rockies in w., s. and e. MON and ex. n. WYO and locally in ne. COL and ex. sw. NEB. The e. population breeds in a salient into c. SAS (Cumberland House, Emma Lake) in a wide band from wc. to se. MAN (Delta, Lake Winnipeg, Pike Lake, Ceadar Lake), e. NDK, e. SDK, MIN, e. NEB, c. KAN, c. and sw. OKA s. to the middle Gulf of Mexico coast of TEX, then e. in IWA, MOU, ARK, LOU, WIS, ILL, MIC (upper and lower peninsulas), IND, KTY, TEN, MIS, ALA, s. ONT (n. to Pimisi Bay, Comermere, Westmeath), ex. sw. QUE (n. to Ile aux Coudres), nc. MAE, ex. s. NBR, locally in NSC (Cape Breton Is.) and PEI (Schooner Pond), then s. through OHO, PEN, WVA, NYK, VMT, NHP, MAS, RID, CON, NJY, MYD, DEL, VIR, NCA, SCA, GEO and FLA;
Winter: w. population winters from s. Vancouver Is., ex. sw. BCO s. along w. slope of Sierras in WAS, ORG to s. CAL, locally in wc. NEV, sw. IDH, nc. UTH, NMX, ex. w. TEX and sw. ARZ. The e. population winters from c. KAN, e. OKA, ce. TEX, ARK, LOU, n. in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys to se. MOU, s. ILL, s. IND, ex. sw. OHO, w. KTY, w. and s. TEN, MIS, ALA, GEO, FLA, SCA, NCA, s. VIR and ex. se. peninsular VIR (Cape Charles).
