Range
New Zealand;
Widespread small relict populations;
N. North Island (range seems to have contracted to three enclaves along 20km of the e. coast of Northland, n. peninsula, is. in the Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Is., Little Barrier Is., Great Mercury Is., Manawatu, formerly at least on lakes in the Himatangi area, Nga Manu near Waikanae, headwaters of the Rangitaiki River and Kapiti Is., n. Auckland in Waipu, Kara, Helena Bay, Kerikeri, Takou Bay, Kaeo). South Island (Fiordland National Park on Dusky Sound, Breaksea Sound and Doubtful Sound, Keplar Mountains and Murchison Mountains, Southland), Stewart Is. and possibly Codfish Is. and Ruapuke Is.
Formerly Chatham Is. and Mayor Is.
