Range

Sw. Europe. E. Europe to c. Asia; Nw. Africa; Red Sea regions; E. Africa; Se. South Africa;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) S. Europe (Pyrenees of sw. France and ne. Spain and Corsica) and the e. Mediterrean region in s. Balkans, Greece, Turkey, Crete, e. in the Middle East (Jordan, Wadi Rum s. to Sinai Peninsula) e. in ex. s. Russia, Caucasus to Pakistan (Baluchistan, Sind), India (Kashmir and Ladakh to Assam) and Tibet. Being reintroduced to the Alps.
(2) E. Asia in Transcaucasus, Transcaspia, s. Kazakhstan, Turkestan, s. Altai to Mongolia, w. and c. China (Sinkiang e. to w. Inner Mongolia, Shensi, and s. to Szechwan and nw. Yunnan).
(3) Nw. Africa (Atlas Mountains) to e. Egypt.
(4) E. Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen, Kenya (Mt. Elgon, Mt. Cheranganis, Loldaiga Hills, Mt. Kenya), Tanzania ( Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru) to e. South Africa (Lesotho).
