Nw. Africa and Europe to e. Asia; C. Asia; India; Lesser Sundas;
Four populations;
(1) S. Europe n. to the Gulf of Finland, Estonia, c. France, Switzerland, e. Germany e. across nw. and c. Russia to Kazakhstan, Turkestan, Kirghiz steppes, s. Siberia (Lake Balkhash), Mongolia and n. China (w. Inner Mongolia and probably sw. Gansu, Hebei) s. to the Mediterranean basin, Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily, nw. Africa in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, n. Libya, ne. Egypt (Nile Delta), Turkey, n. Jordan (Dibbin Forest National Park), Arabia (Oman), Iran, Turkestan, Tadzhikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Nepal to India. Migrant at Hortobagy National Park and Zemplen, Hungary.
Migrating birds concentrate at crossings over water at the Straits of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Suez;
Winters to c. Africa (Sahel Zone from Senegambia to Ethiopia) and se. Asia and the Lesser Sundas;
(2) Lesser Sundas from Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Roti, and Timor.
