S. Europe to c. Asia; Se. Lake Baikal; Ec. China;
Fragmented population in Asia;
Sw. Europe in the Mediterranean basin from Portugal (Castro Verde), Spain (Villafafila, Zamora, Spanish Steppes and Donana), n. Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and nw. Libya) e. in s. France, s. Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, Cyprus, s. Austria through e. Europe, Romania, Greece, c. Turkey, Israel, Jordan (Zubiya Wildlife Reserve, Dana Wildlands), Saudi Arabia (Mahazat as-Sayd Reserve), Iran, n. Afghanistan, s. Russia n. to s. Ural Mountains, sw. Siberia in the Altai and Tuva, Transbaicalia to Mongolia and ne. China e. to Shandong.
Migrates across the Sahara. Birds observed in India and Burma are probably migrants.
Main wintering areas are in Africa from s. Kenya s. to Botswana and South Africa.
Winters irregularly in s. Asia (Taiwan).
Occasionally winters in Portugal (Monforte Plains and Campo Mairo) s. Spain, s. Turkey and Azerbaijan.
