Range

E. Europe to c. Asia;
C. Europe, where it occasionally breeds, from e. Sweden, Gulf of Finland, Estonia, Poland (Biebrza Marsh), Czechoslovakia, Hungary (Hortobagy National Park, Kiskunsag National Park, Kiskunlachaza), Romania and Bulgaria e. across c. and se. Russia s. to the Ukraine, the lower Volga River and lower Ural River s. to n. Kazakhstan and c. and s. Siberia from the n. Altai to Irkutsk region in the upper Lena Valley and ex. nw. China (nw. Sinkiang).
Main fall migration is over e. Mediterranean Basin.
Spring migration is further e.
Winters mostly in sw. Africa s. from Angola, Namibia, n. South Africa, Botswana to Zimbabwe and Zambia.
