Himalayas through se. Asia to the Solomon Is.;
Fragmented island populations;
Foothills of the Himalayas in n. Pakistan, n. and e. India (Kashmir e. to Assam and Manipur), Nepal e. to s. China (Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan Is.), Burma, Thailand, n. Laos, Vietnam and Malaya to the Greater Sundas (Java, Kalaotoa), Moluccas (Halmahera, Ternate, Buru and Ambon), Sulawesi, Philippines, w. Papuan Is. (Salawati), New Guinea (Yapen Is. and Fergusson Is.), Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain) and the Solomon Is.
Himalayan populations winter in sw. India and Sri Lanka.
