Range

Nc. Canada;
Ex. restricted range;
Sc. Mackenzie in Wood Buffalo National Park and adjacent n. Alberta. Formerly breed from s. Mackenzie, n. Saskatchewan and n. Manitoba s. to North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa as well as in se. Texas and s. Louisiana. Small experimental breeding programs are underway in the Rocky Mountain States (Gray's Lake, Idaho, New Mexico, rarely se. Arizona), se. Texas and Florida (Kissimmee Prairie region).
Migrates in a 100-300km wide corridor across the Great Plains (Platte River). Briefly stops irregularly at staging areas in the fall in Saskatchewan, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
Winters in sc. United States in coastal e. Texas (Aransas National Wildlife Refuge).
