Range

Palearctic;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Iceland, Faeroe Is., British Isles, and Europe e. to n. Russia (Pechora River), and s. to nw. France. Isolated population in ne. Spain and s. France along the Mediterranean coast to Adriatic Sea, and Aegean Sea to Turkey.
Winters along the North Sea coast (Netherlands along the coast of the Wadden Sea), the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal, and w. Africa s. to Mauritania and Nigeria, and also the Mediterranean Sea coast of Tunisia.
(2) W. and nc. Russia from mouth of Ob River s. to the n. Black Sea, Caucasus, and nw. Iran. and w. Siberia e. to the Ob River.
Winters along the coasts of the Middle East (Red Sea, Arabian seas, Persian Gulf), India, Sri Lanka, and e. Africa as far s. as South Africa.
(3) Lower Ural River Basin and Transcaspia to Aral Sea, Lake Balkhash, w. Siberia and e. Kazakhstan to nw. China.
Winters in e. China and Korea.
(4) Ne. Asia in Kamchatka, n. Sea of Okhotsk, w. North Korea, and possibly from Amurland, Ussuriland through Manchuria to Hebei in ne. China.
Winters in se. China s. to Guangdong, and occasionally as far as Japan, and Burma.
