Range

New Zealand;
Breeds in interior of South Island mainly e. of the Southern Alps.
Winters along coasts of North Island (n. from Waikare Inlet to North Cape, Whangarei, Kaipara, Manukau Harbors, and Firth of Thames, Tauranga Harbor, Kawhia Harbor, and Raglan Harbor), n. and e. South Island (Golden Bay, Tasman Bay), and Stewart Is. (Paterson Inlet).
