Fragmented distribution;
Sc. Siberia in Transbaicalia, ne. Mongolia, s. Manchuria and e. China (Inner Mongolia to s. Heilungkiang s. to Fukien and Hainan Is.) s. to e. Pakistan (Sind), n. India, Sri Lanka, Andaman Is., Thailand and se. Asia. Locally in sw. Japan, Ryukyu Is. and Taiwan. Has bred in Borneo and Philippines (Luzon).
Winters in India to se. Asia, Malaya, the Philippines and Australia (arriving in October in w. and n. Western Australia, n. to c. Northern Territory, and dispersing e. and s. to Queensland (Yarrabah Turf Farm near Cairns), New South Wales and Victoria to c. South Australia).
