Range

Ne. Asia, nw. and nc. North America;
Three or four populations;
Ne. Siberia from the lower Yena River e. to the Chukotsky Peninsula and Anadyrland. St. Lawrence Is. Coastal n. and w. Alaska from Hooper Bay and from Point Barrow e. to nw. Canada (Inuvik and probably n. Yukon and nw. Mackenzie). Migrates s. (July to October) along both coasts as far n. as New England and through the interior. A few birds move s. along the w. Pacific coast as far as Japan.
Migrates n. (April and May) in a more westerly pattern mainly w. of the Mississippi with a major staging area in Cheyenne Bottoms, Kansas.
Winters in the w. and s. United States s. to Guatemala and, less frequently, El Salvador and Hawaiian Islands.
