Circumpolar in the Holarctic;
Breeds in w. and n. Alaska s. to Hooper Bay, n. Canada in the Canadian Arctic islands n. to Melville Is., Bathurst Is., Devon Is., and Baffin Is. s. to ne. Mackenzie, Southampton Is. and n. Quebec, w. Greenland, ne. Europe in n. Russia including Novaya Zemlya and n. Siberia from the Taimyr Peninsula to the Chokotski Peninsula and Anadyrland.
Disperses as far s. as Tierra del Fuego, South Africa, Australia (Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales (Wollongong), Queensland, Tasmania) and New Zealand.
