N. and c. Europe across temperate Asia to Alaska and w. Canada and United States;
(1) Iceland, Faeroe Is., British Isles and nw. Europe in Scandinavia to the w. Russia (White Sea).
Winters in w. Europe s. to n. France, Switzerland, Austria and Poland, Mediterranean Basin and n. Africa to the Persian Gulf.
(2) Russia from the Kanin Peninsula and Moscow area e. to nc. Siberia in the Lena River region.
Winters in se. Europe including the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan and Kirghiz steppes, n. Mongolia e. to Lake Baikal and Transbaicalia.
(3) Ne. Siberia from the Lena River region e. to Anadyrland and Koryakland, s. to Sakhalin Is., Kamchatka and Kuril Is.
Winters along the coasts of China, Japan, and Taiwan to Hainan.
(4) W., c. and s. Alaska from the Alaskan Peninsula to Kotzebue Sound and Brooks Range s. in w. Canada (Yukon to nw. and s. Mackenzie s. along the Pacific coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Is. and e. in s. Yukon, n. Alberta, c. Saskatchewan to ne. Manitoba).
Disperses along the coast of the w. United States.
