Range
Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Caspian Sea;
(1) W. and s. Europe in the British Isles, s. Scandinavia s. to the Mediterranean and e. to Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
Winters in Africa and nw. India and Sri Lanka.
(2) Se. United States s. from Virginia, Florida and locally along the Gulf coast to s. Texas, Campeche Bank, is. off the Yucatan Peninsula of e. Mexico, Belize and through the West Indies (Bahamas, s. Cuba, Virgin Is.) and occasionally Curacao and Trinidad.
(3) Locally in Caribbean on is. off coast of Colombia, Venezuela, Netherland Antilles e. to Los Roques and n. Trinidad, Guiana (Cayenne), e. Brazil (Bahia) and s. Argentina (Buenos Aires and Patagonian coast of Chubut and Santa Cruz).
Apparently disperses as far s. along the Pacific coasts as Peru, and the Atlantic coast s. to Brazil and Uruguay.
