Range

Macquarie and adjacent is.;
Restricted range;
Macquarie Is. and Bishop and Clerk Islets, wandering to Campbell Is. and occasionally to s. New Zealand (South Island, Otago). Pale-faced birds have been observed at the following locations: occasionally at Heard and Kerguelen Is. with small numbers breeding in colonies of Macaroni Penguins at Marion and Crozet Is. (Cochons and Possession Is.). These latter birds may be aberrant Macaroni Penguins rather than vagrant members of this species.
Winter range is poorly known.
