Circumpolar in the Holarctic;
(1) Ne. Canada from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Greenland, Iceland, Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen, n. Norway, ne. Russia (Kola Peninsula), Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya.
(2) E. Taymyr Peninsula e. to New Siberian Is.
(3) Wrangel Is., Herald Is. and ne. Siberia on the n. Chukotski Peninsula.
(4) N. Pacific Ocean along coasts of e. Siberia, Kamchatka, Sakhalin Is., Kuril Is., n. Japan and Commander Is. to islands in the Bering Sea and n., w. and sw. Alaska on Cape Lisburne, Kotzebue Sound and Diomede Is. s. on the Pribilof Is. to the Aleutians and e. to Kodiak Is., Middleton Is., St. Lazaria Is., nw. Mackenzie, Prince Leopold Is., Bylot Is. and e. Baffin Is., s. to n. Hudson Bay (Coats Is.), Chesterfield Inlet, n. Quebec, Labrador, Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland.
Formerly s. to ne. United States (Maine).
Winters mostly in lower Arctic waters and lower boreal zone s. to Gulf of Maine, North Sea, Sea of Japan and Gulf of Alaska.
