Range

Holarctic;
Fragmented distrubution in Palearctic;
Arctic between 67° and 78° N from the border of Norway and Russia (Pechenga River, Kola Peninsula), Kolguyev Is., s. Novaya Zemlya Is. and the arctic slope of Siberia (Yamal Peninsula to the Chukotski Peninsula), Alaska s. to St. Lawrence Is. and the s. Seward Peninsula and Canada in the n. Yukon (Herschel Is.), Northwest Territories (Banks, Victoria, Prince of Wales Is., n. Keewatin on the s. Boothia and Melville Peninsulas s. to se. Keewatin s. to ec. Mackenzie).
Winters in n. Norway, ex. nw. Russia and the Pacific coast of Siberia (Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Is.) s. to c. 35° N, but otherwise rarely s. of 50° N, Japan (Hokkaido, n. Honshu), Bering Sea coasts, se. Alaska and rarely to Canada (British Columbia) and the nw. United States.

Summer: arctic slope of ALK s. to St. Lawrence Is. and the s. Seward Peninsula, n. YUK (Herschel Is.), NWT from n. to ec. MAC (Hanbury and Thelon Rivers) and FRA (Banks, Victoria, and Prince of Wales Is.) and from n. to se. KEE (s. Boothia and Melville Peninsulas and Angikumi and Yathkyed Lakes);
Winter: migrates along the coast around ALK to se. ALK and rarely to BCO, WAS, ORG to c. CAL.
