Three populations;
Fragmented African population;
(1) Breeds in Ireland, s. Scotland, England, ex. s. Norway, Sweden (Baltic Sea coast), s. Finland, France (Jura), Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany (Main River), Switzerland (Lake Geneva), Poland (Karsiborska Kepa in the Swina River Delta), Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, e. Portugal, Spain, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece (Lake Kelbia), Romania, Bulgaria and locally in n. Morocco, n. Algeria, n. Tunisia, Egypt (Nile delta), Israel, Turkey, Russia from s. Lake Onega to Transcaucaus and Transcaspia in Kazakhstan, sw. Siberia (Tuva region and upper Ob River basin) and ex. s. Ussuriland (Lake Khanka), w. and sw. Mongolia (Altai Mountains, Orog Nor), w. and n. China (Sinkiang, Kansu, Tsinghai, Tibet and in the e. in Manchuria s. to Beijing), probably s. Korea, Japan (n. Honshu, Aomori Pref.) s. to Iraq, n. Iran (Kashmir and Ladakh), n. Pakistan, Nepal and n. India (Kashmir, Ladakh).
Winters in the s. part of its range including the coasts of the Atlantic, North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Black Sea and the Caspian Sea to s. Iran, s. Pakistan, n. India (Sind to ne. Assam, Manipur), Bangladesh to c. Burma, se. China (middle and lower Yangtze River s. to Yunnan and Kwangtung) and Taiwan.
(2) Resident in three main areas: in the Ethiopia highlands, in e. Zaire, w. Uganda, nw. Rwanda (Rift Valley lakes), Burundi to sw. Kenya and c. Tanzania and ex. n. Zambia and in ex. s. Zimbabwe, s. Mozambique through South Africa to sw. Namibia and locally in Gabon, sw. Angola, nc. Namibia, Botswana, w. and e. Zambia, sw. Ethiopia.
(3) Resident in sw., se. and e. Australia (sw. and n. Western Australia, Northern Territory (Arnhem Land), n. and e. Queensland, New South Wales (Lake George and Lake Bathurst), Victoria (Hattah-Kulkyne National Park), se. South Australia), e. Tasmania and New Zealand mostly on South Island e. of the Southern Alps (Lake Alexandrina, Ashburton Lakes), and North Island.
