C. Canada s. through the United States, Mexico, Central America, West Indies to s. South America;
(1) Breeds from s. coastal Alaska (Copper River region), sw., c. and se. Canada (c. British Columbia, sc. Mackenzie, n. Alberta, n. Saskatchewan, n. Manitoba, c. Ontario, sw. Quebec, s. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Is. and Nova Scotia), s. through the United States (c. Maine) to c. Mexico (Guanajuato) and the n. West Indies (Bahamas, Great Inagua) and sparingly in Guatemala (Lake Atitlan), w. Panama (Bocas del Toro, Chiriqui). Winters in the s. part of its range and in Cuba and Hawaiian Is. (Hawaii at 'Aimakapa Pond).
(2) Resident throughout the West Indies, c. Mexico (Colima, Jalisco, Mexico), Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
(3) Resident in Panama (Canal Zone) e. to n. Colombia, n. Venezuela (Zulia, Carabobo, Aragua, Monagas), Trinidad, Tobago, w. Ecuador, w. Peru, Chile (Atacama to Aisen and Chiloe Is.), coastal Guyana, Surinam, Guiana and e. from c. Brazil (Maranhao and Bahia (Chapada Diamantina) s. to Rio Grande do Sul), c. Paraguay, n. and e. Uruguay to c. Chile (Chiloe Is.) and s. Argentina (Chubut).
