Range

New Zealand;
North Island where it breeds on the coastal lakes in Northland from the Aupouri Peninsula and the Karikari Peninsula s. to North Kaipara Head, and from South Kaipara Head to Muriwai, in s. Auckland from the Awhitu Peninsula to Pokeno, on the Volcanic Plateau on most lakes, generally confined to the more sheltered w. and sw. shores, in the Rotorua District (in order of decreasing populations: Lake Rotoiti, Lake Okareka, Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotoma, Lake Okataina, Lake Rotomahana, Lake Rotoehu, Lake Okaro, Lake Rerewhakaaitu, Lake Rotokawa) and e. of the main ranges from East Cape s. nearly to the Cook Strait (East Coast, Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa), Manawatu, Wanganui and less frequently Taranaki. In the nonbreeding season, it congregates on large shallow lakes and sewage ponds in s. North Island and lakes heated geothermally on the Volcanic Plateau. Formerly on South Island where widespread, but common nowhere in the late 1960's.
